Gordon gave a slide show to members covering many previous events that the club has held, including Presidents' Nights, Club Dinners, Walking Weekends in the Lake District, District and National Conferences etc.

Members were up-dated on discussions, particularly the distribution of the balance of monies in the Benevolent Fund for this year.

Committee members presented their annual reports and council members were elected for the next Rotary year.
Subscription was also agreed at £80.00, plus a further voluntary contribution to Rotary Foundation, minimum £10.00.

A business meeting was held immediately following the council meeting and members were kept up to date with the discussions by committee chairmen.

Fellow member Allan gave us a most interesting talk, with slides, about the village of Marsden. Built around the coal mine, many of the houses were demolished when the mine closed in the 1970's.

Allan gave us a slide show of beautiful pictures on a variety of subjects that he has been collecting over recent months.

Tue 25th February 2014 Fellowship Meeting

At this fellowship meeting, we were able to be kept up to date with on-going matters, including arrangements for our Club Dinner on 3rd March. Sunderland's chances of winning the League Cup were also debated.

Sat 22nd February 2014 ROTARY DAY SAINSBURY'S COLLECTION

Members were collecting at Sainsbury's in Fulwell on the Saturday before Rotary Day, with proceeds of £179.00 going to End Polio Now.

Tue 18th February 2014 Quiz by Charles Westerberg

Charles Westerberg had brought along a quiz and the result was closely fought, with one point between all the teams and a tie breaker having to be asked.

Tue 11th February 2014 Business Meeting

Committee chairmen reported to members on the discussions at the previous council meeting. Tickets for the Club Dinner on Monday 3rd March were distributed.

Tue 4th February 2014 Fellowship Meeting

As a number of members were absent for various reasons, we had a fellowship meeting. Tony Wortman had brought a quiz, which kept members quiet and amused for some time. The B team won by one mark!

Tue 28th January 2014 EVENING MEETING WITH WIVES AND FRIENDS

About 30 members, wives and friends gathered for our quarterly evening meeting. The speaker, Philip Curtis, gave us a talk, with slides, about the 1950's, bringing back many memories for most of the audience.

Gordon spoke himself about his hobby from childhood of collecting stamps. He showed us some of his collection and told us some philatelic stories.

Tue 17th December 2013 Christmas Message from Rev'd Chris Howson. Host Keith Higgin.

Rev'd Chris Howson is the Chaplain at Sunderland University and attached to the Minster. He came to tell us about his work there, his impressions of Sunderland and its history and to deliver a Christmas message of hope for the future.

Sat 14th December 2013 SAINSBURY'S SUNDERLAND NORTH

The store kindly invited us back for another collection day with Santa in his Sleigh, which was extremely popular with the children. The parents were very generous and we collected almost £600 for our Benevolent Fund.

Tue 10th December 2013 SANTA'S SLEIGH COLLECTIONS

Our final Sleigh route was round South Bents Estate, where we were again generously received and the children enjoyed talking to Santa.

Mon 9th December 2013 SANTA'S SLEIGH COLLECTIONS

Santa's Sleigh was seen in the streets between Whitburn Road and Mere Knolls Road as far as Talbot Road this evening, talking to the children whilst his helpers had a collection from parents.

Sun 8th December 2013 SANTA'S SLEIGH COLLECTIONS

Coniston Avenue, Cairns Road, Alston Crescent and all streets to south side of Dovedale Road were the roads covered on our first Sunday afternoon collection, which proved popular with children and parents alike.

Fri 6th December 2013 SAINSBURY'S SUNDERLAND NORTH

We were kindly invited to take Santa and his Sleigh into the new store and take a collection. This was very successful and raised over £400 for our Benevolent Fund.

Wed 4th December 2013 SANTA'S SLEIGH COLLECTIONS

We covered Sidecliffe Road, Roker Park Road, then all the streets back to Sidecliffe Road, returning via Neale Street. The children enjoyed seeing Santa and the parents were again very generous.

Tue 3rd December 2013 SANTA'S SLEIGH COLLECTIONS

Sea Road from Whitburn Terrace, then all the 'D' streets between Sea Road and Dykelands Road, including Deepdene Road and north of Dykelands Road was the area covered by our Sleigh. Everyone was very generous and the youngsters enjoyed a chat with Santa.

We were given a most interesting talk, with slides, of the area of Roker and Seaburn from the late 19th century to the mid 20th Century. Our only regret was that Philip had to rush his presentation and there was no time for questions.

We collected along the North side of Dovedale Road, then Torver Crescent and all streets off that side of Dovedale Road. The children enjoyed seeing Santa and their parents were very generous.

Fri 29th November 2013 - Sun 1st December 2013 Collections at Clay's Garden Centre, Washington

Clay's Garden Centre kindly allowed us to collect donations from shoppers again over a three day period. Their customers were very generous and we collected over £1,100 for our Benevolent Fund.

Sat 9th November 2013 PRESIDENT'S NIGHT DINNER DANCE

President Pat and the 72 people who attended enjoyed an excellent President's Night Dinner Dance at the Seaburn Marriott. The meal was most enjoyable and the music from "Cats Night Out" was just right, ensuring that the dance floor was full all evening.

Andrew is taking part in a Project during his Gap Year that will take him to Hong Kong for 12 months starting in August 2014. He will work amongst children and adults, including disabled, helping to run an Outward Bound course.

Beverly came to give us a talk, illustrated with a power point presentation, about Diabetes. She described the two types and told us the symptoms to look out for.

Thu 24th October 2013 World Polio Day

Collecting at Sainsbury's Store in Fulwell for End Polio Now, members raised £260 for this worthy cause. Thanks are due to Heather and the store staff for their co-operation.

We were pleased to welcome 4 members from Washington Rotary Club. Our speaker was from Houghton-le-Spring Rotary Club. He gave an interesting talk on James Cook, who came from a humble background and became a world famous explorer.

Fri 11th October 2013 - Sun 13th October 2013 Lakes Weekend

Eighteen members, wives and friends enjoyed a wonderful, sunny weekend at the Damson Dene Hotel. Walking for some and shopping or sightseeing for others was the choice over both days. A quiz on Saturday evening taxed our memories.

Tue 1st October 2013 EVENING MEETING WITH WIVES AND FRIENDS

36 members, wives and friends enjoyed a musical evening with George Hetherington on keyboard and Eileen Glenton singing songs from the shows. It was a surprise 'party' particularly enjoyed by John McLoughlin, whose 80th birthday was the following day.

Fred Rylance returned to give us the second part of his talk on the history of Cleadon House.

Katie visited to tell us about her experiences at RYLA this year. She was one of 28 candidates and described all the activities that they had to do each day. She had very much enjoyed the experience.

Sat 7th September 2013 Garden Party

President Pat had a Garden Party at her and Gerry's home to raise funds for Rotary Foundation.
There was a hot buffet and desserts, with wine and beer to purchase. A tombola was laden with prizes.
Tickets were £10.00 each. The weather was cool but fine.

Fred Rylance visited and gave the first part of a talk on Cleadon House, a 17th century property in the centre of Cleadon Village. Fred was a friend of the lady whose family had owned the property for two generations and described some of its features.

DG Dave visited to deliver the annual D.G.'s message. He told us about his heroes, both from childhood and into adulthood. He spoke about who had influenced him in Rotary and promised his full commitment to District 1030 during his year in office.

Rotarian John Byers from Jarrow with Harton visited and recounted some amusing tales of when he was a flower delivery boy on behalf of his wife, who ran a flower shop in South Shields.

Speaker Rotarian Graham McGrath gave us an amusing presentation on famous people with whom he has had contact, however brief,in his working life.

Tue 23rd July 2013 Speaker Isao Hara. Host Brian Franklin

Isao came to England 6 years ago, initially as a Rotary Scholar. He has gained his PhD in Linguistics from Newcastle University and will be returning home now. He came to give us a brief talk on his impressions of his stay and to say farewell.

We were pleased to welcome A G Denise Tate to our Club Assembly, when the committee chairmen outlined the events that have been planned for the year.

Tue 9th July 2013 Handover Meeting

President John handed over the chain of office to Pat Emmerson, our first lady President, who installed John McLoughlin as President Elect. Pat then told us of her hopes for a successful and eventful year.
