Tue 21st April 2015 Business Meeting

Members were advised of discussions at the council meeting held last week.
Nurses after being hard at work checking blood pressures.

Fri 17th April 2015 Stroke Awareness Day

Members again had a stand in The Bridges to enable nurses from the Stroke Association to check the blood pressure of members of the public. This helped to identify people at risk of a stroke or heart attack. Over 150 people were tested.

Our Annual Club Dinner was again held at Sea Hotel, South Shields. About 70 attended to enjoy an excellent meal and then hear Professor Robert Williams tell the story of
'The Profumo affair - a very British scandal.'

Philip returned to give us another of his interesting talks, this time on 'Lost Shops of Sunderland'. It brought back memories for many in the audience and showed how the town's prosperity changed in the 20th century.

Santa was round the streets on these two dates from 6.00pm to 8.30pm, seeing the children and finding out what the want and where they live..

Fri 12th December 2014 - Sun 14th December 2014 Sainsbury's Collections

Sainsbury's manager had agreed that we could have a collection at the store again, with Santa on his sleigh. This was very popular and enjoyed by all.

Morrison's Store manager kindly agreed that we could collect there again this year over the first weekend in December.
The public was again very generous, for which we were most thankful.

Clay's Garden Centre allowed us to have a Christmas collection again this year, for which we were grateful. The customers were very generous.

Michael returned and showed us a film he has made whilst on holiday in Ghana. He also gave us some background about the country, which is free of ebola, but still very poor.

Tue 25th November 2014 EVENING MEETING WITH WIVES AND FRIENDS

We had a most informative meeting, with a talk by the chief executive of BID Sunderland. This is a company formed to support events in the city centre, thus to improve the environment for retailers and businesses.

Philip Curtis returned to give us his talk on "The 1960's", which covered the decade generally and in Sunderland. It was a lively and entertaining evening, which our Satellite Club members also attended.

About 70 people joined us for our Coffee Morning for Macmillan at the Little Theatre, held jointly with Seaburn Inner Wheel, to whom we are grateful for their considerable help. We made £370 for the charity and have added another £185 from our charity ac

Sat 30th August 2014 GARDEN PARTY AT 11 LABURNUM GROVE

The club again held a Garden Party on a warm but windy day. There was a hot buffet and desserts served at 4.00pm. Beer, wine and soft drinks were able for purchase and there was a tombola. The event raised over £680 for Rotary charities.

John Lipscombe, Peter Calvert, Gordon Coxon and relatives, including two grandsons, completed the Bike Ride arranged by Washington Rotary from their venue to the Stadium of Light and back.

The speaker was Tony Atkinson, who gave us a most interesting presentation about Gertrude Bell, an exceptional lady who travelled to and lived in the middle east in the late 19th and early 20th century.

Thu 17th July 2014 Douglass Dobbing awards and Dictionary presentations

President John, Brian Franklin and Peter Calvert visited Seaburn Dene and Dame Dorothy schools to present Dictionaries and also the first Douglass Dobbing Memorial awards to deserving pupils.

Tue 15th July 2014 Speaker Rotarian Dennis Heptinstall with a quiz.

Dennis again provided us with a quiz, which provoked the usual debates. It was won easily by the 'B' team.

Sun 13th July 2014 Disabled Games

Several of our members attended the Games in Middlesbrough. We had sponsored transport for some competitors and parents. The whole event was enjoyed by all.

Tue 1st July 2014 Review of the Year and Induction of New President

President Pat reviewed her year and was surprised at how much had been achieved, including giving over £10,000 to charitable causes. She then handed over to the new President John McLoughlin.
