History
The Club was founded in 1933 and the Club is active in all avenues of Rotary Service. Former Rotarians the late Rex Cook and the late George Tomlinson became District Governors. Darwen Rotarians have played leading roles in establishing Darwen’s Old People’s Welfare Centre, the Abbeyfield Society and our Probus Club. The Club has a wide range of activities supporting Local and International charities. It organises an annually Sponsored Walk to help charities raise funds. In 2009 £8220.00 was raised. The club runs other fund raising activities and these are distributed annually to Local charities.
The club in conjunction with the W.M. & B.W. Lloyd Charity organises annually a Lloyd Award for Initiative that is open to young persons between the ages of 16 – 19 who have not undertaken full time employment. It helps to organise up to two weeks in the UK to help a young person achieve an ambition that they may not have otherwise realised. There are two winners each year and it is keenly contested.
Internationally the Club sponsors the education of a child in Sri Lanka. In the last year we have organised the funding of Shelterboxes for Haiti and Aquaboxes for Pakisan.
In 1959 proceeds from a Home Trade Exhibition formed the basis of the Rotary Club of Darwen Educational Fund. Subsequent legacies from past Rotarians have helped this fund to grow and it assists young persons and educational establishments in the Darwen Area.
Members are also active in many other spheres of local life, including Darwen Civic Society, fulfilling the Rotary motto ‘Service above Self’.
