Welcome to the website of the Rotary Club of Garstang & Over Wyre

The Rotary Club of Garstang and Over Wyre was formally established on 9th August 1965, and takes its membership from the rural area located between Preston, Lancaster and Fleetwood.

Garstang Area

The name of the club was formally changed to Garstang and Over Wyre in December 1999. The club presently (2007) has 29 members from a wide variety of classifications.

An ancient Lancashire market town located mid-way between Preston and Lancaster.

There has been a settlement in Garstang since AD597 and in 1597 an Act of Elizabeth I decreed that a market could be held.

In 1667 a Charter of Incorporation was granted and the free borough was allowed to appoint a council.

In the days of the Turnpike roads Garstang was a busy coaching town with coaches rattling through its cobbled streets disgorging tired and hungry passengers into its inns many of which still exist.

For many years Garstang changed little but since the early 1960's extensive residential development has taken place with the urban population including the separate parishes of Catterall, Barnacre-with-Bonds and Cabus trebling to about 8,000 and a further extension planned.

However many of its ancient structures have been retained and an abundance of narrow alleyways, known locally as 'Weinds' add to the special interest. It is a very pleasant place in which to live and can fairly be described as one of Lancashire`s most attractive market towns.

Over Wyre

A loosely define area north of the River Wyre between Garstang and the coast a Knott End encompassing numerous villages including Pilling, Stalmine, Nateby, Winmarleigh together with the substantial residential areas of Preesall/Knott End, and Hambleton.

Although not generally considered as being part of Over Wyre the villages of Great Eccleston, Little Eccleston and Inskip come within the club's catchment area.
