A little of our History: About Preston Amounderness: The Inaugural Meeting of the Interim Rotary Club of Preston Amounderness took place on 31st January 1977 and the Club received it's Charter from R.I.B.I. President Hunter Scott on 27th June,1977.The District Governor at the time was Desmond Carroll, ( Blackburn ) and the District Extension Officer Ted Harrop, ( Fleetwood ). Initially the Club met at The Orchard Restaurant, Whittingham Lane, Broughton but it soon outgrew the accommodation available for it's meetings and in 1984 moved to Broughton Park Hotel. That Hotel is now The Marriott so the Club has had the same place for it's Meetings for24 years. There are currently 38 members in the Club and for 2008 /2009 the Club President is Barry Johnson. In 2010 /2011 the President is expected to be Howard Jackson The name Amounderness comes from King Alfred the Great(849-899) when he divided England into “Hundreds” A Hundred consisted of ten tithing’s and a tithing consisted of ten families. Each hundred families was given a name. the Amoundreness Hundred included all the land between the river Ribble on the south sideand the river Wyre on the North side, and from the Fylde Cost in the west to the Forest of Bowland in the east. The name Amounderness was still in use in legal documents until 1974 and was adopted by the Rotary Club at its foundation. The area described is the recruiting area for the Rotary Club. The Amounderness Hundred was invaded by Vikings, who were really Scandinavian pirates and were the terror of the northern waters. They came in large numbers by sea in about 982 AD
Strong Supporters of Foundation: The Club has a history of successfully completing Matching Grants having implemented schemes in Sao Paulo, Brazil, India and St Lucia in the Caribbean. The Sao Paulo and St Lucia Matching Grants followed directly after club members, David Eaves and Peter Laszlo, had led District 1190 Group Study Exchange Teams to those areas ". In the last of these programmes, the R.C.of P.A. has recently completed a Rotary Foundation Matching Grant working with the Rotary Club of Knysna, Western Cape, South Africa, (District 9350 ). The object of the scheme was to ensure increased comfort for the frail and elderly patients at Loeriehof Home in Knysna. The provision of 11 specialist Hi - Lo beds enables patients to be more mobile and self reliant and greatly helps the nursing staff. Each of the beds has a plaque affixed thereto referring to the co-operation between the two Rotary Clubs. Prior to obtaining estimates and a commitment to the programme P.Ps.David Eaves and Chris Fox both visited Loeriehof Home to confirm the worthiness of the scheme. It was pointed out to us that most charitable funds available these days in Africa are spent on Aids related matters and the elderly people of the country are really "missing out ". P.P.David Eaves and Rotn. Arthur Fairhurst visited Loeriehof Home in February, 2009, to view the completed programme. The R.C.P.A. contribution to the scheme was just under £2000 which because of the good rate of exchange at the time equated to US $4000. Our District ,1190, matched our contribution. Rotary Foundation then matched the District contribution and also put in 50% of our contribution . So, our initiative of putting up £2000 became £7000 which equated to US$14300. We have a heritage of 3 other projects with matching grants each with successful outcomes.
