Welcome to the website of the Rotary Club of Mounts Bay

A very warm welcome from The Rotary Club of Mounts Bay

The club organises a number of community events and projects each year including The St Michaels Way Walk held in May and The Old Folks Christmas Party in December, the club also organises many other events to raise funds to support our community and other good causes locally, in the UK & abroad.

WE NEED YOU TO WALK FOR US!

But, don't worry, it will be a lot of fun. We invite you to walk, amble or jog 12 miles along the St Michael's Way, to help us raise money for some very good causes, while having a lot of fun at the same time, on Sunday 16th May. If you don't fancy 12 miles, we do have a shorter circuit of 6 miles for you.

Every year, walkers and families from all over Cornwall and elsewhere (some of our supporters even arrange their holidays around this event) to help us raise funds for worthwhile causes at home and abroad. Since the St Michael's Way Walk started, seven years ago, we have, with your help, raised over £65,000 for many causes, including (amongst many others) Cornwall Air Ambulance, Fishermen's Mission, Merlin Project, Precious Lives Appeal, and so on, and so on, as well as for many smaller charities and projects that would otherwise not have happened.

This year, we are working closely with the Cornwall Search and Rescue Team. This is a group of volunteers dedicated to saving lives. They have been involved in many missions, including the terrible floods at Boscastle in 2004, and more recently in our area, the fatal coach accident on 22nd December at Townshend. The team have helped us with our St Michael's Way Walk ever since they were formed by a group of enthusiastic volunteers in 2003. Last year, they picked up one of our walkers who got into difficulties part of the way round the walk. They were called out to 62 missions in 2009, and so far this year they have been called out 12 times, usually to help find missing persons, or people and animals trapped down mines, but they literally have to be prepared for anything. As a result of all this effort, we have decided to make the Cornwall search and Rescue Team our main charity for 2010.

As you can see from the picture, whole families participate in this walk, which passes through some of the most wonderful scenery of West Cornwall.

Go on, have fun and make a date: Sunday, 16th May, 10.00 am at Lelant Church (the starting point). We can help with transport at the beginning from the end point (Ropewalk Car Park, Marazion).

"Let's end Polio now!" say Mounts Bay Rotarians

There is historical evidence that polio, a crippling and often fatal disease, has been around for thousands of years, even afflicting the top echelons of society in ancient Egypt. President FD Roosevelt of the United States had it, and up to 1985 most countries on the planet were affected. Since then, in an initiative started by Rotarians world-wide, working in partnership with the United Nations, National Governments and even the Bill Gates Foundation, polio has been driven back.

"However, polio is just a plane ride away from these shores" commented Peter Norman of Mounts Bay Rotary Club, "and that is why we still have to vaccinate our children and grandchildren against this terrible disease that cripples its victims for life."

But there is good news. Polio is now endemic in just four countries of the world, and Rotarians from all over are determined to consign the disease to the history books. Here in west Cornwall, clubs will be out collecting money to pay for vaccines in India, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nigeria, the last polio hotspots that are left, thus helping the lives of millions of children.

Working together, Mounts Bay and Penzance Rotary Clubs will be out in force on 26th and 27th February, both in Penzance and outside major retail stores, collecting money to pay for vaccines and talking to the public about the work of the immunisation days overseas, so the public are urged to find out more and to give generously to this worthwhile cause.

During the week and afterwards, Rod James of Mounts Bay Rotary Club and former headmaster of Humphry Davy School, will be giving assemblies in local schools and explaining to pupils what polio is and why it is so important to eradicate this scourge. "As Rotarians, we feel it is vitally important that young people are made aware of this awful disease, which had a terrible effect on many thousands of children of my generation."

Gulval School Supports Polio Eradication

Mrs. Del James, a teacher at Gulval School, was amazed when an assembly she gave resulted in most of the children supporting a non-uniform day for polio eradication.

"I feel very passionately that children in the school should understand the living conditions children have to contend with, in other parts of the world. And once I had explained what polio eradication was all about, we had tremendous support for the non-uniform day."

A certificate was presented by Mount's Bay Rotary Club to the school in recognition of their collection of £115 on the day, which will help to vaccinate up to 575 children – an incredible result from such a small primary school.

Karsten Nissen, president of Mounts Bay Rotary Club, commented, "I think it's fantastic that today's schoolchildren can give so generously to help Rotary to eradicate altogether this terrible disease, which has been around for thousands of years."

Penzance shoppers show their generosity!

The people of Penzance showed amazing generosity on Saturday 23rd January, when they contributed nearly £2,000 to ShelterBox, the Cornish Rotary charity, in the space of a few hours. Members of Mounts Bay Rotary Club were out in force, with a tent and their collecting buckets.

Men and women, children and senior citizens alike, all donated with true Cornish generosity. Many people commented about how they had been touched by the recent news from Haiti, and they felt they had to do something to help. One couple even wrote out a cheque on the spot.

Fund-raising chairman of the Rotary Club, Roy McDiarmid said "The response from the public, particularly that of the youngsters of Penzance, was heart warming. There were so many individual acts of kindness that it would be unfair to single any one out. Let's just say it reinforced our high opinion of our town!"

So far, 5,000 ShelterBoxes have been sent to Haiti, with more to follow, just as soon as funds allow. Thanks are due to the local police and to Cornwall Council for allowing this street collection to go ahead.

A new year begins for Mounts Bay Rotary Club

Handover

The Mounts Bay Rotary Club had their last meeting of the year on Thursday, at which outgoing president Jeff Criddle handed over the chain of office to well-known former businessman, Karsten Nissen. The event was however tinged with sadness, following the sudden death of Rotarian Mike Lindley, a few weeks ago. Despite this tragedy, the past year was a successful one for the Rotary Club, which raised over £17,500 during the year, all of which was spent on a wide variety of projects for local communities, both home and overseas, including the Precious Lives Appeal for a children's hospice in Cornwall.Photo Rotarian Jeff Criddle hands over the chain of office to his successor Karsten Nissen for 2009-10.

Paul Harris Fellowship Award

Former hotelier Rotarian John James received a Paul Harris Fellowship, the highest award that can be given by a Rotary club, "in appreciation of tangible and significant assistance given for the furtherance of better understanding and friendly relations among peoples of the world.
