Welcome to the website of the Rotary Club of Preston Guild

Welcome to the Rotary Club of Preston Guild

Preston Guild processionKing Henry II granted Preston the right to have a Guild Merchant in 1179. The Guild was an organisation of traders, craftsmen and merchants which controlled trade in the town. From time to time the Guild met to update its records, admit new members and deal with people falsely claiming the right to trade in Preston. These meetings were held every 20 years and were the occasion for celebrations and processions. The monopoly of trade in Preston continued until 1790.

The end of the Guild's power to control trade did not lead to the abolition of the Guild Merchant. This has survived because the celebrations had become prestigious social gatherings, and the great festival which is the Preston Guild continues to flourish today. The last Guild was held in 1992 and to celebrate the local Rotary clubs decided to form the first club in the district open to both men and women - our club.

Membership of the Club

Our members come from Preston, Blackburn, Lytham and along the M6.  The breakfast format suits people commuting into Preston or regularly working out of the city.  Our numbers hover just under 30 with around 20 per cent women.  The membership is drawn widely from the professions: health and teaching; the law and accountancy; banking, insurance and law enforcement. Other members are involved in building and design. photography and charitable organisations.

Joining a Rotary club is by invitation, but any men, women or couples who are interested will find a warm welcome and should contact us for further information. Clubs are nonpolitical, nonreligious, and open to all cultures, races, and creeds.

Rotary is a worldwide organization of more than 1.2 million business, professional, and community leaders. There are over 32,000 Rotary clubs in more than 200 countries and geographical areas. Members provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill and peace in the world.
