Details are as follows:
Walks available:
Stroll in the Park - suitable for walkers of any age and ability. Duration is flexible.
10 mile walk in the local countryside lasting around 5 hours with a 5 mile alternative en-route lasting around 2.5 hours. These are more demanding walks.
The walks will start and finish in Cheethams Park, Stalybridge. All walkers should report to the registration point on the flat area near the Park Street entrance of the Park. All walkers should wear suitable clothing and footwear and carry their own supply of refreshments relative to the distance walked. Stewards will be available on all walks.
Start times:
5 and 10 mile - 10am
Stroll in the Park - 10:30am
It is most important that the walks start on time so please arrive well before the start time so that the necessary formalities can be completed.
Dogs:
Dogs are welcome on the walk particularly if they are sponsored. Remember that they will need water and we would advise you to take your own supply and a dog bowl. We also advise that dogs be under control and on a lead at all times. Please note that dogs must be on a lead whilst in Cheethams Park.
Safety:
The organisers expect all those people taking part in the Hospice Walk to observe carefully all the relevant rules in both the Highway Code and the Country Code and to obey all reasonable safety instructions either verbally by walk officials, by any signs en route or in writing. The organisers and those associated with the Walk are under no liability whatsoever in respect of any personal loss or injury which may be sustained in the course of this event. Walkers under the age of 16 are welcome but must be accompanied by an adult.

DANCE EXTREME 25TH FEBRUARY 2010 IN AID OF THE POLIOPLUS PROGRAMME

On 25th February we sponsored an event called 'Dance Extreme' which was a celebration of dance, with all proceeds going to support Rotary's Polio Plus programme. The event was arranged by Tameside MBC and focused on street dance. 9 dance troups entered with each receiving a trophy at the end of the evening. Three troups went through to a dance off - Milton Monkeys, Chickatee and Urban Ethnics - with Milton Monkeys eventually winning the special Rotary prize (pictured above with President Ian Watson and Rotarian Julia Taylor to his left).
Over £500 was raised for Polio Plus as a result of this event and in conjunction with the curry night at Lal Quilla (see below) and a collection at Tesco Stalybridge, the Club succeeded in raising a total of £1225 for the programme.
The Rotary charity works with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) towards the eradication of polio. In 1985 Rotary started its Polio Plus programme and since then more than 2 billion children have been given oral polio vaccine. Polio can only be prevented through immunisation, which has been successful in eradicating the disease in all but four countries - Afghanistan, India, Pakistan and Nigeria - in the last 25 years. Polio mainly affects children under five years of age, but a vaccine almost always protects a child for life. The cost of immunisation is very little - 50p can immunise a child against polio for life.
NEW MEMBER FOR DUKINFIELD AND STALYBRIDGE ROTARY CLUB
Idu Miah became the Club's newest member on 4th March. Idu is the Sub Postmaster in Mossley and is picture below right together with President Ian Watson (far left) and Assistant Governor Bernard Murphy.

CHRISTMAS FLOAT COLLECTIONS
Our collections around the streets of Dukinfield and Stalybridge and outside Tesco, Stalybridge, raised a total of £5382. Unfortunately, the amount raised is down from last year due to adverse weather conditions which resulted in the last two collections being cancelled. Father Christmas sends his apologies for any disappointment caused.
CHARITY NIGHT AT LAL QUILLA 21st OCTOBER
We had a fabulous evening at the Lal Quilla Indian restaurant in Mossley at our charity night on 21st October. The food was delicious and the owners and staff couldn't do enough for us. A total of £465 was raised (including a £50 donation from the restaurant), which will go towards the Rotary END POLIO NOW campaign, a campain that aims to completely eradicate polio in the world. A huge thanks to the owners and staff at Lal Quilla and to all those who attended for making the evening such a success.
HOSPICE WALKS 20th SEPTEMBER 2009
Once again we had a glorious sunny day for our 10 and 5 mile sponsored walks in aid of Willow Wood Hospice. Around 50 walkers participated and we look forward to announcing the amount raised in the coming months. Picture to follow. Our thanks to all those who participated.
PRESENTATIONS TO BENEFIT THE LOCAL COMMUNITY
The club have made the following presentations during recent months:
1. Stroke aphasia handbook. 30 handbooks were purchasedata cost of £600 for the Tameside Stroke Unit and formally presented to Sister Seline Walmsley and Alex Hill of the Stroke Unit on 23rd July 2009. The handbook provides valuable information for those patients who suffer speech problems following a stroke.
2. Presentation of an automatic defibrillator to the St John Ambulance to help
treat patients who suffer sudden cardiac arrest. The picture, right, shows President Ian Watson presenting the defib. to Peter Hartley, St John Ambulance County Officer, and Lynn Davenport of Dukinfield and Ashton under Lyne St John Ambulance on 10th September. The defib was purchased solely for use in and around the Dukinfield and Stalybridge area. The difference between automated defibrillators and models used in hospitals is in the ease of use and the features that diagnose the patient before delivering a shock. If the heart is not in fibrillation, no shock is delivered.
VISIT BY STEVE JOYCE OF THE MINES ADVISORY GROUP
On 23rd July, Steve Joy
ce gave the club an extremely interesting presentation on the work of the Mines Advisory Group and the valuable work that they are continuing to carry out to safeguard people in countries abroad by clearing land of mines. The club presented a cheque for £100 to assist the Group with its work.
NEW MEMBER JOHN REDDY JOINS DUKINFIELD AND STALYBRIDGE
We are delighted to welcome John Reddy to our club. John is a techncial teacher who lives in Dukinfield and he has wasted no time in getting involved in the many activities of the club, including stewarding at Mottram Show and assisting with the Willow Wood Hospice 5 mile walk.

TEDDY BEAR'S PICNIC STALL AT STALYBRIDGE CARNIVAL 28TH JUNE 2009

A total of £82.65 was raised on a blisteringly hot June day. Many thanks to all those who called at the stall to play the Teddy Bear's picnic.
STROKE AWARENESS DAY 18TH APRIL 2009
Once again, we supported Stroke Awareness Day by offering free blood pressure testing on Saturday 18th April at Tesco, Stalybridge. High blood pressure is a key risk factor for stroke so The Stroke Association and Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland recommend that you have your blood pressure measur
ed regularly to ensure you are in good health and to reduce your risk of stroke.
Stephen Cross from the Stroke Unit in Dukinfield tested 84 people on 18th April and recommended that 7 of those consult their GP. Many thanks to Stephen for giving up his Saturday in order to raise the awareness of stroke risks, to Tesco for allowing us to hold our event on their premises and to those who made our event worthwhile by calling at our stand to have their blood pressure tested.
CHRISTMAS FLOAT 2008
Donations from the Christmas float rounds this year amounted to £6316. A big thank you to all of you who gave so generously both on the doorstep and at Tesco in Stalybridge. This money will be used to help worthy causes both in the local community and in the poorer countries of the world.
