Welcome to the website of the Rotary Club of Worsley

Welcome to the website of the Rotary Club of Worsley.

ABOUT OUR CLUB

The Rotary Club of Worsley received its Charter from Rotary International in 1978.We currently have 25 members all from different professions or vocations. We enjoy our Rotary and do our best to create a convivial atmosphere at all our meetings and events. Our regular weekly meetings are held on Tuesdays at 7.15 for 7.45pm at the Novotel Hotel Worsley where we enjoy a meal together usually followed by an invited speaker.Other events take place at regular intervals throughout the Rotary Year. They are a mix of social events [7 this year] activities aimed at fund raising or using our manpower and talents to help the local community. This includes an  annual Spring Weekend away with our wives and friends.

CHARITY WORK

Each year we raise in excess of £10000 for local and Rotary charities through the Christmas Float, organising concerts featuring Brass Bands, Chetham’s School of music or a Jazz Band, or organising a Garden Party.

We use the money raised  to donate to local charities such as St. Ann’s Hospice ,sponsoring the Citizen-Student of the Year Award at a local sixth form college and various international charities such as supplying aid to the victims of natural disasters, donating to Water Aid and sponsoring 2 children through VisionAid.

We also organise the filling of shoeboxes with food, household goods and toys and sending them to Eastern Europe.

WORKING IN THE COMMUNITY

Apart from touring Worsley to delight local children in the fortnight before Christmas we provide a complimentary taxi service to and from St Ann’sHospice for the benefit of patients and close relatives. We also support senior citizens by arranging an annual musical concert and we provide transport to and from the event. In addition we take a coachload of old folks for an evening to Blackpool to see the Illuminations every October.

WHAT IS THE SECRET OF OUR SUCCESS?

This is difficult to analyse but is probably a variety of factors. Our meetings are held in a very relaxed atmosphere, never rushed and giving everyone the opportunity to speak with other members. The diversity of our membership brings with it a wide range of characters and like minded people. This Club has raised and donated many thousands of pounds to local and international charities [including the eradication of polio]. However we never take ourselves too seriously and at our meetings friendly banter and participation is encouraged. This seems to be the pattern of our success, it works and continues to work.

WHY DO WE  NEED NEW MEMBERS?

Every organisation requires new blood and whilst we are holding our own in maintaining numbers inevitably membership is lost because people move jobs or move away from the district , fall off the planet or experience extreme pressures of business etc.

WHO IS ABLE TO JOIN ROTARY?

We would particularly welcome new young members who are keen to use their time and talents for the benefit of the local and international communities. There is no age requirement for membership but young blood brings with it enthusiasm, new ideas and perhaps a more modern approach to some of our activities.
