Welcome to the website of the Rotary Club of Northampton

Northampton is a large market town in the East Midlands, approx. 67 miles Northwest of London on the River Nene, and is the county town of Northamptonshire.Northampton Guildhall

The Rotary Club of Northampton was founded in 1921 and now meets at St. George's Masonic Hall on Mondays for lunch.  We have regular lunchtime speakers, in addition to planning and implementing our service projects, both local and international.

We also like to enjoy ourselves socially and, as an example, our members visited Berlin recently with our twin Club from Pirmasens, Germany.  There's a full story and some photographs here.

We also participate in the Rotary Fellowship Exchange programme which brings Rotarians from overseas to Northampton to stay in our homes for a few days and we are able to visit their counties on the same basis.  Two such visits have recently taken place and you can see more on the visit from Australia here, and from South Carolina, USA, here.  To find out how our American guests saw their visit to England and Northampton here is their leader's blog.  That's us at Sulgrave Manor, on the right.

Paul Harris Fellowship for Ann Tate, Vice-Chancellor, University of Northampton

Following are the remarks made be President Lesley Allitt when presenting Mrs Tate with her award.

“Ann Tate moved from Ulster University in Belfast to Northampton in 2002, to take up the post of Vice Chancellor at the University of Northampton.

During her tenure there have been huge changes in Higher Education instigated by the last Government which she has taken in her stride, whilst establishing the University as a modern, forward looking, and very successful seat of learning.

She has also become involved in the local community, both as a member of the Board of Governors at Northampton High School and also on the Board of the West Northamptonshire Development Corporation.

However, it is for the help and support that she has given to the Rotary Club of Northampton that we are here to recognise today as with the help or her husband, Rtn Rodney Tate, we have been able to establish much closer ties with the University.  This has been through the Ambassadorial Scholars programme, the support for RYLA by providing International Students as candidates, and the very generous hosting of our visiting GSE teams and Friendship Exchange visitors.

We are also allowed to use the University facilities for the Annual Science Lecture and, of course, our Monthly Car Boot Sale, so we have much to thank Ann for.  Now that she is retiring it is an opportune moment for us the show our appreciation for all that she has done for the Town of Northampton and for our Rotary Club.

It gives me great pleasure, therefore to present Ann with the highest accolade that our Club can bestow - the award of a Paul Harris Fellowship.”

ROTARY RAISES OVER £3M IN THREE MONTHS FOR LIFE-SAVING RELIEF BOXES

Members of Rotary in Great Britain and Ireland are saying a huge thank you to the public after it was revealed that over £3m was raised for ShelterBox, Water Survival Box and Aquabox  in the first three months of this year for Haiti and other countries hit by disasters.

The staggering figures provided by the charities, shows how much the members of the public care for others at times of great need and that Rotary is trusted to deliver help where it is needed the most.

Lesley Allitt from the Rotary Club of Northampton said: “Our members and those of the other Northampton Clubs were all out and doing whatever we could to raise funds.  You cannot fail to be moved by the horrific news reports and stories of loss. We might not be able to go over and help but we can send aid."

“I am very grateful to the people of Northampton who have given so generously and contributed to this amazing figure.  We work closely with the community and it’s thanks to that relationship that people feel they can trust us to do the right thing with their donations.”

Aquabox, Water Survival Box and ShelterBox volunteers have worked tirelessly to get aid to Haiti, Chile and other countries affected by disasters, as well as supporting those who are providing help. Had it not been for the unique design of the aid boxes and life-saving equipment contained within, hundreds if not thousands of lives would have been lost.

President of Rotary in Great Britain and Ireland, David Fowler, said: “I am overwhelmed and delighted by the amount of donations kindly given by the public. This is what Rotary is all about, helping others at times of great need.  Thanks to the unique network of Rotary members, we can get aid to disaster zones very quickly by using our worldwide network of members.”

Lasse Petersen, General Manager of ShelterBox, said: ‘We want to say a huge thank you to members of Rotary in Great Britain and Ireland for their dedication and commitment in helping raise funds for families who have lost their homes in the Haiti earthquake and other disasters around the world. We are also indebted to the public for their generous donations which makes it possible for us to deliver emergency shelter and life-saving supplies. This year is ShelterBox's tenth anniversary and an opportunity for us to thank all our supporters for everything they do.’

Hugo Pike, Chairman of World Water Works said: “Not only did Great Britain and Ireland dig deep into their pockets, we received a donation of £42,000 from Taiwan. Last year we sent out hundreds of Water Survival Boxes following the typhoon. Taiwan donated as a thank you and their generosity says a great deal about the relevance of the box. Emergency rescue services took our boxes to Haiti which again is a great endorsement of the Water Survival Box and its relevance in these disasters.
