This year's winner of the Rotary Club of Gosport's Student Bursary Scheme

This year's winner of the Rotary Club of Gosport's Student Bursary Scheme is Theresa Olivero,a mature student from Gosport. Theresa has a young family, and is about to begin her final year studying for a BA in Childhood and Youth Studies at Portsmouth University. Before that, she worked at the Rowner Sure Start Children's Centre and at the Magpies Pre-School, also in Rowner. She is going to use the Bursary towards buying the many text books needed for her final year's dissertation. The photograph shows Theresa receiving her cheque from our President Graham Collins.

Welcome to the Rotary Club of Gosport

The Rotary Club of Gosport received its charter in 1919 and almost immediately had an impact on the town’s history:

From The News

Thousands of people going to work by ferry from Gosport every day have reason to be grateful to the town's Rotary Club. Former members of the club helped to negotiate the building of the Ferry Garden site and pontoon which gives that familiar splash of colour to the town's exterior.

Back in 1919, the town council and firms negotiating the construction of the pontoon were in deadlock, until leading members of the newly-formed Rotary Club stepped in. They met representatives of the firms concerned and then reported back to the council. Days before the Bill, giving powers to build the pontoon, was due to be read in Parliament, the Rotary deputation arranged a meeting of all parties concerned. An agreement was eventually reached, and the Rotary Club was thanked through president, Mr. C. E. Pilcher, for being the direct cause of the settlement.

Over the years the Rotary Club of Gosport has been involved in a vast number of international, national and local charitable activities and has raised considerable sums for the old and blind in the town, and throughout its history it has given large amounts to the War Memorial Hospital. By browsing this website it will be possible to see that we are still very active in the various fields of service.

The Club now includes 34 men and women who embrace the motto: "Service above self" Our club members come from different walks of life and membership is composed of business and professional people, active and retired.

We welcome prospective new members who may be able to contribute some of their time to enjoy the social aspects of membership whilst also involving themselves in our community and vocational activities.

We meet every Thursday at 18:45; 1st, 3rd & 4th at Gosport & Stokes Bay Golf Club, 2nd at the Bayside Cabin, 5th Thursday, please contact our secretary.

About Gosport from Wikipedia:

Gosport is a town, district and borough in Hampshire with around 79,000 resident inhabitants, with a further 5-10,000 during the summer months, situated on the south coast of England. Part of the South Hampshire conurbation, it lies on a peninsula on the western side of Portsmouth Harbour opposite the city of Portsmouth, to which it is linked by a pedestrian ferry.

Until the last quarter of the 20th century it was a major naval and military centre associated with the defence and supply infrastructure of Portsmouth Harbour. With the decline of these activities, many of its fortifications and installations, such as Fort Blockhouse and Palmerston Forts like Fort Brockhurst, have been opened to the public as tourism and heritage sites, with extensive redevelopment of the harbour area as a marina. Stokes Bay and the Solent are popular areas for yachting. Other tourism sites in Gosport include the Royal Navy Submarine Museum based just outside of Fort Blockhouse, Explosion!, the Gosport museum and 'The 1642 Living History Village' at Little Woodham.
