SUPPORTING SURREY AIR AMBULANCE – ASHFORD ROTARY DONATES £3,250

Each year our President for that year chooses a charity that he would like the club to support, over and above our fund-raising for local and international charities. Last year's President, Simon Kroner, chose as his  charity the Surrey Air Ambulance. This vital service receives hardly any taxpayers' money and depends entirely on charitable fundraising to cover its running costs, which are in excess of £1.7 million each year – £4,657 a day, 365 days a year. It started operations in June 2007 and has flown over 1,200 missions since then. Without it, many lives would have been lost.

We raised a total of £3,250, much of it by Simon personally, and in March we were privileged to visit the Air Ambulance base at Dunsfold to meet the crew of pilot, doctor and paramedic and to have a close-up look at the £4.5 million MD902 Explorer helicopter, equipped to hospital standards.  After the presentation of the cheque the crew gave us an insight into their highly skilled, and sometimes dangerous, life-saving work and answered our many questions.

As part of our continuing programme of social activities our visit was inevitably followed by a pub lunch in Dunsfold – we had taken the precaution of travelling by coach!

ASHFORD ROTARY RESPONDS TO HAITI EARTHQUAKE DISASTER

ABOUT US...........

Our club was chartered in 1966 and we meet at Ashford Manor Golf Club on Mondays at 6 for 6.30 p.m.

Meetings consist of a dinner followed by a speaker or club business. (See details in panel on right)  Meetings and dinner usually end by 8.30pm to allow socialising in the bar if so wished.

We welcome people interested in joining us and enjoying fun and fellowship whilst fundraising for worthwhile causes.

We currently have 18 male and female members, both retired and working, and we are pleased to say that our club is growing! As one of the smaller clubs in our Rotary District we are proud of our record of service to the community and we enjoy the teamwork required to achieve our goals.

We raise money to help organisations and individuals in the Ashford and Stanwell area as well as for projects in the Third World and for disaster relief at home and abroad.  As part of the 'Rotary International' organisation we also support worldwide projects funded by the Rotary Foundation, which is the organisation's international charity.  Perhaps the most significant of these is Polio Plus which is a joint programme with the World Health Organisation to eradicate Polio from the world

We have interesting speakers on diverse topics, we have social evenings, outings, partners' evenings, theatre visits etc.

You can become as involved as you wish.  As a member you would be asked to attend weekly if you can but this not obligatory.

You will find a warm welcome from the Club. Don't be reluctant to come along and dine with us without commitment.

All we need to know is that you are coming, so please contact the number shown on the right a few days before you would like to visit us.
