Young Speakers Shine In Hillingdon Competition

Swakeleys Intermediate When you were 12, or even 16, would you have voluntarily made a speech in front of strangers, in a competition?  No, well neither would most of us.  But last night we watched 7 teams of young people, 3 teams in the 12-14 age group and 4 in the 15-18 age group do exactly that.  This year's “Youth Speaks”, a public speaking competition for young people organised by our club in conjunction with the other clubs in our Borough (Pinner, Ruislip-Northwood  & Uxbridge) was held at Swakeleys school 29 November.
Harefiled Academy
Stiff competition was provided in both age groups, with Swakeleys School (above L) triumphing in the Intermediate section and Harefield Academy (L) in the Seniors.  But really, everyone competing was a winner – to have the courage to take part and to conquer the nerves that always accompany public speaking was a feat in itself.

Well done all of them

Hillingdon Schools Support Rotary's World Polio Day

October 24th is World Polio Day, highlighting the continuing need to finally stamp out this pernicious disease. Schools in Hillingdon have been showing their commitment to the cause by raising awareness amongst students and by raising funds for  immunisation campaigns in affected areas. Last month students at Haydon Academy held a “non-uniform day” and raised the magnificent sum of £1,694.74.

Pictured R (Top) is club President Norman Jones receiving the cheque from Haydon Teacher Ms D Barber and members of the school's Eco club Grace Algar, Meghan Moore, Zoe Jackman, Abby Weare, Emma Hanmore, Sarah Dickson, Isobel Syprou & Alicia Rose.  Below R is Ms Barber proudly displaying the cheque!

Building on donations from Bishop Ramsey (£1,000), Vyners and Oak Farm  schools (£750 each), Hillingdon schools have raised more than £4,200 for the cause in the last year.

Since 1985, eradicating polio has been Rotary’s top priority. Largely through the efforts of Rotarians and the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, the campaign is “this close” to its goal. Polio cases worldwide decreased by 35 percent during the first ten months of 2011 compared with the same period in 2010. And India -- one of the four countries where the virus remains endemic (the others are Afghanistan, Nigeria, and Pakistan) -- reported only one case during that time. As at the end of September, worldwide Rotarians have raised US$190 million toward Rotary's US$200 Million Challenge to release $355 million in grants from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

Though the polio eradication campaign has made great progress, challenges remain. Seeing the job through to the finish will require redoubled effort and commitment.

District Governor Visits & Golf Day cheque presented

Each year we look forward to the visit of our District Governor for the year. Niall Blair, this year's incumbent, joined us on 10 August. Niall has bedecked his car spreading the word on how close Rotary is in the fight to rid the world of Polio (pictured R with Club President Norman Jones). Also that evening the club presented the $10,000 proceeds of the Golf Day (see below R) to a representative of MacMillan.  Norman, Niall & Ka
