Ambassadorial Launch of the Rotary Cake Recipe Calendar 

 

The informal exchange between the Rotary Club of Woodbridge and the Rotary Club of Machico Santa Cruz earlier this year inspired an interesting side event. Many of the ladies became interested in the various cakes that had been produced and Marina Richmond (Rtn Keith Richmond's wife) who is also a member of the Inner Wheel Club in Woodbridge decided to produce a calendar for 2010 of the various recipes, which could be sold and all profits would be shared between the 2 clubs for charities which they support. Translated into 2 other languages the calendar is a unique work.  

Each year in the English Church in Funchal Madeira a Garden Party takes place at the invitation of the Honorary British Consul to celebrate the Queen's Birthday. Unfortunately the garden was and still is currently being completely renewed and at the time of the QBP it was not possible to hold the event.  A cocktail party was held as a belated event coinciding with a regular visit from HM British Ambassador to Portugal Alexander Ellis. We were kindly permitted by the Honorary Consul Joy Menezes (who spoke at a formal dinner when the 2 clubs came together in Madeira) to make a presentation to the HM Ambassador to launch the calendar.

The event was attended by over 100 guests. The Ambassador reinforced the strong historic links between Portugal and England and the calendar is a good example of forging new international friendships and furthering cultural understanding while at the same time raising some all-important funding for charities supported by the 2 Rotary Clubs.

The calendar came from the printers only a few days ago and if you will pardon the pun, has been selling like 'hot cakes' ever since.

Friends and contacts have not been buying just ones and twos but many 4 and 8 and we even had one that purchased 20 calendars.
