Brief Details: Crossroads Caring for Carers -Local Charity
Katherine Smith talked about 'Crossroads – Caring for Carers' on 5 March 2010. The name was taken from the TV program crossroads which starred Sandy in a wheelchair and the help he required. In the 70's, ITV donated £10,000 to help set up support in the real world for people caring for others. The word 'carer' has only been in existence for 25 years.
There are 220 schemes in England, Ireland and Wales (Scotland has its own scheme). The Ipswich and District scheme started in 1981 and the Suffolk Coastal scheme in 1987. These have now been combined together and currently have 55 support workers.
The support workers are very well trained as they need to be able to look after all age groups with all disabilities. Due to this high level of skill, Social Services often call upon Crossroads for there help
People requiring help are initially assessed and may have to go on a waiting list for free support which would normally be 3-4 hours per week. The free support provided is down to the funds available which is a mixture of Government funding and various local fund-raising activities.
Until free support becomes available, people can purchase support. Crossroads also runs clubs for children and adults and has a beach hut in Felixstowe.
