Business & Fellowship

Names of persons worthy of consideration for a prestigious local award are being sought by Rhyl’s Rotary Club. Past President Hari Hughes, chairman of the Community Service committee told a businesss and fellowship meeting at Faenol Fawr that he would welcome nominations from organisations, businesses, families or friends of people who had made an outstanding contribution to the benefit of the community so that their notable service could be recognized through the club’s annual Community Award. Meanwhile, President Rod Brocklehurst confirmed that moves to establish closer co-operation with neighbouring clubs were being stepped up to help strengthen membership and secure a sound future for Rotary in the region. Among a number of ideas being looked at was the possibility of creating a first satellite club, centred on Ysbyty Clwyd, as well as increased sharing in programming, fund-raising and social events. “We are already pressing ahead with our collaborate efforts and this will continue because we simply must do something,” he stressed. He called on members to bring along friends, neighbours, relatives or work colleagues who would be most welcome to become part of the still very relevant world-wide Rotary family. Treasurer John Williams announced that more than £170 had been raised for local charities at a recent collection by members at Morrison’s superstore who had generously offered two additional dates for similar collections around the Christmas period. Vocational committee chairman Past president Mike Howarth said he was finalizing a number of attractive events, including a return visit to Bangor Races and a tour of acclaimed vineyards at Conwy or Penygroes, with many more ideas under consideration for well into next year. The club’s popular elderly persons coach outing and tea will again take place on June 11 while a second group of elderly gentlemen from Rhyl will be setting off next month on a free holiday, organized by the club and funded by charitable support. Members were reminded that the next meeting on Tuesday September 27 would be centred on a talk on the invaluable work of the Hope and Homes for Children, the President’s nominated charity for his year in office, and would be open to wives, partners and friends. A big turn-out was hoped for, he said.
