Caledonia McBrayne Story Ian McCrorie

Thu, Feb 8th 2007 at 12:00 am - 2:00 am

Gourock Rotary was throughly entertained by an excellent presentation by Ian McCrorie on the Clyde Steamers and in particular the history of Caledonia McBrayne. Ian had some very old slide taking us back to The American Civil War. The Confedirates bought Clyde Steamers for their speed to break the river blockades. Unfortunately none of their purchases made it across the Atlantic to take part. Clyde Steamers were also use in both World Wars by the armed forces. The steamers really had their day in Victorian times and the Clyde was very popular. Times however progress, or should I say recess, and the only steamer left on the Clyde is the Waverly.
