ALAN MILMAN WOOD

Tribute to Founder Member Alan Wood who died 3rd January 2010

Alan Milman Wood, who celebrated his 92nd birthday just at the turn of the year, passed away on Sunday, January 3rd and his funeral was held at Melton Ross on Tuesday, 12th January 2010. Typical of Alan and his family is that the retiring collection was for Rotary Foundation.

Alan was a founder member of the Rotary Club of Brigg formed in 1969 and it was quite unique that one of the people who did much of the spadework in those far off days was a gentleman named Alan Wood from Louth.

Alan was the last of the line of founder members and had been an honorary member for several years as increasingly he found great difficulty attending meetings. His interest in the club never waned however thanks in part to regular visits from Tony Turnbull, Brian Parker and several other members.

A great raconteur, Alan had many tales to tell of his experiences in the RAF. He was the navigator on the plane that returned Chamberlain back from Germany to the UK with the, now infamous, piece of paper before the 2nd World War.

In the Club Quiz Team, under the captaincy of Richard Alderson, Alan and the late Joe Ford were key members and almost invincible. Oh how things have gone downhill!

Alan leaves a wife Anne and four sons and many will know the Woods brand as an exceptional Real Ale.

One day Alan was spotted delivering to the Yarborough Hunt in Bridge Street, Brigg and described himself as 'the drayman' ~ typical of a modest man with no ostentatious ideas. Rotary has lost a true gentleman and ardent fan.
