Mon Aug 23rd 2010

On Monday 23rd August 53 Amersham Rotarians, wives, partners and friends visited the 2012 Olympic venues.
We met up with our Blue Badge guide, Victoria, in Stratford and after a short tour of the locality our coach took us to the Railway Inn for morning coffee.
Then we drove over to the Lower Lee Valley to the viewing point for the Olympic Park. The scale of the construction site is amazing. The main stadium, Aquatic Centre and Velodrome are progressing well ahead of schedule and trial events will be held next year. Apart from the various plans and displays, Victoria explained the logistics of running the Olympic Games from competitor and VIP accommodation, security, transport, refreshments, toilets etc.. She also talked about the legacy of homes, jobs, world class sports facilities, parkland etc..
A roast beef lunch and a few drinks were taken back at the Railway Inn before we headed off to see other sports venues.
The Excel centre where "contact" sports will be held such as Boxing, Judo, Weightlifting, Taekwondo and Table Tennis???
We crossed the Thames and drove round Richmond Park - Equestrian events, and on to the Woolwich Barrcks - Shooting events of course, and finished at Woolwich Arsenal for tea.
Unfortunately there wasn`t time to tour The Royal Artillery Museum - Firepower.
We enjoyed a great day out enhanced by our superb guide Victoria who was very knowledgeable and amusing.
