If you go down to the woods today - you'll find them a lot cleaner. At least in Dalkeith's Ironmills Park.
Members of Esk Valley Rotary Club spruced up the banks of the River North Esk and parts of the park as part of a tribute to the first Scot to hold the post of President of Rotary International (RI), a worldwide organisation of more than 1.2 million business, professional and community leaders.
Guided by Jo Cooke of Midlothian Ranger Service, 16 Club members removed rubbish from around the banks.
"The major part of the work was on the footbridge across the river into the park where there was much overgrown ivy and trees," reported former Club President Maurice Jackson. "These were severely cut back, revealing for the first time in ages the delightful structure of the bridge and Victorian wrought-iron railings."
The club intends to carry out further clean-up operations, also directed by the Ranger Service, over the coming weeks.
The work is part of a series of sanitation projects by Rotarians to mark the appointment of John Kenny of Grangemouth as President of RI. There are 33,000 Rotary clubs in more than 200 countries and geographical areas.
