Rotary Pancake Race 2011 - by Celia Gardner

Pancake day is when we usually use up all our ingredients before a time of fasting in readiness for Easter.  Your Vigornia Pancake team of John Sitch, John Gibson, Lance Turner and Bertie (Leukaemia Care) aka Mandie Fitzgerald used up all their energy to gain a place in the final race on Tuesday 8 March.  They had gallantly fought off their opposition on the two heats but were beaten in the final by a team of athletic young men from Lloyds TSB.

The photographs cannot give justice to the atmosphere that was generated along the High Street outside the Guildhall.  I wouldn't say we were competitive – not much – just let's say that it was said on a number of occasions – we are in this to win this and getting to the final was testimony to such grit and determination.  Bertie battled against the competition, despite limited vision and not being able to see the pan into which the pancake had to be tossed at least once on each leg of the race.  The other team members were exceptional sprinters (although their pancake tossing technique may need some work before next year).  'Next year' I hear the cry!  Oh yes – the pancake bug has bitten.

The money raised from the bucket collection and race entry fees has gone to Magg's Day Centre and Acorns Children's Hospice.

Thanks to our friends in Worcester South Rotary Club for organising the event.
