Shelterbox - Big Green Box Week
Like most Rotary clubs, the Rotary Club of Plympton support Shelterbox. In this respect, here is a plug for their 2011 Big Green Box Week which was recently launched by TV presenter Konnie Huq.
ShelterBox will mark its annual awareness week, Big Green Box Week (June 11-18 2011) with the launch of a new fundraising campaign - the Big Box and Buy, supported by ex Blue Peter and The Xtra Factor presenter, Konnie Huq and a number of other A-List celebrities. ShelterBox is inviting people from across the UK to join in with the first ever Big Box and Buy by turning boxes of unwanted goods into boxes of life saving equipment that people desperately need. By selling unwanted household possessions and raising money for ShelterBox, people will be supporting families around the world who lose everything when disaster strikes.

Thanks for Life - End Polio Now
The crocus bulbs planted by members of the club back in October - together with members of Roborough, Plymouth Albion and Plymouth Mayflower Rotary clubs bloomed into life back in February as part of our efforts to help raise awareness of the Thanks For Life campaign - part of Rotary's "End Polio Now" efforts.
Through the work of Rotary and it's partners Polio has been erradicated from all but 4 countries.
Quiz Night
Despite a few teams dropping out in the days leading up to the event, the quiz night on the 9th April was a great success with a fun evening for everyone - even if the winning team did "bend the rules" and had 2 extra players in their team. Our own Adrian Roberts and his team held up the fine club tradition of not quite coming first - winning the wooden spoon. Our club must also thank Amy Cole from the BBC who did a stirling job as our question master on the night as well as the Colebrook Chippy who provided the Fish n'Chip suppers for everyone. |

Christmas Events

With Christmas almost upon us, the club members have been undertaking our annual Christmas rounds around the streets of Plympton. As is also constumary, President Christine visited the Darby & Joan club - who as ever are grateful for our continued support. Many club members also attended the Christmas lunch at Borringdon Golf Club who again provided a wonderful meal.

2011 Young Artist Competition
The sixth annual Plympton Rotary Club "Young Artists Exhibition" was launched on Thursday 7th April at Plymouth City Airport by the Lord Mayor of Plymouth, Councillor Mary Aspinall. Once again this exhibition showcases the artistic talents of pupils aged 4 to 18 from the Plympton and Plymstock areas of the city and celebrates these young people's creativity. The Young Artist Exhibition further embraces the Rotary Club of Plympton's efforts in the field of Youth Opportunities throughout Plymouth.
This event has become a prestigious event in the clubs' (and schools) calendar but its success is ensured by the hospitality and sponsorship of Plymouth City Airport through the Sutton Harbour Group and Air Southwest.
The exhibits are on view to the public until the 4th May in the Passenger waiting room.
The participating schools in this years' exhibition, to whom we are grateful for taking part are: Boringdon Primary School, Chaddlewood Primary School, Elburton Primary School, Glen Park Primary School, Pomphlett Primary School, Yealmpstone Farm Primary, Hele's School and Ridgeway School

Plympton Cards

Rather than present club banners, the club have taken the step to produce our own gift cards featuring local landmarks photographed by our own David Mallalieu. The International Committee will also be selling packs of these cards in aid of the Schools for All charity.
The President of Rotary International each year sets a challenge to clubs all over the world in the form of the Presidential Citation. This award is designed to get clubs engaged in the Four Avenues of Service and Membership which are the cornerstones of Rotary and clubs can use it as a benchmark of how the club is doing. 2010/11 Rotary International Presisdent, Ray Klinginsmith designed this years citation to specifically test each club in each of these avenues of service and at their latest meeting, past District 1290 Governor Ken Edmonds was pleased to present Rotary Club of Plympton President, Christine Carmichael not with the citation award but with the citation award with Distinction showing that the Plympton club had exceeded the minimum targets set.
