Home | Membership Services | 20 July 2011 - Rotarian Ray Norris talks about his life and career

Wed Jul 20th 2011

On July 20 our speaker was one of our new members Ray Norris. Ray was born in Berkhamsted and won a scholarship to Berkhamsted School. On leaving school he started as an articled chartered surveyor in London.

He was a keen member of the ATC and that interest, plus the fact that he narrowly missed being bombed, led him to working as a bomb damage surveyor.

He then decided to have a change and joined a Building Society, but no ordinary one, only the Malaya/Borneo Building Society. He promoted new houses after the war in Malaya which he felt was the most useful time of his life.

He then worked in Hong Kong before returning to England to work for Taylor Woodrow on projects in the West Indies. He also worked in Scotland before joining Arlington Securities who built among other things Port Solent where Ray, a keen sailor berthed his yacht.

Ray’s other hobbies include Rugby, working for the Amersham Hospital League of Friends (started by Rotary) and RNLI.
