Home | John Waterhouse spoke about the NHS

Wed Jul 25th 2007

John gave a stimulating talk which gave rise to a lively discussion about the issues raised. What is more important everybody listened intently  the whole time which must have been at least 30 minutes. The President had to call a halt to questions shortly after 9.00p.m.

John stressed that he was looking at the macro issues within the NHS which caused some difficulties to at least one member who thought he had quickly switched to talking about retailing. He reassured us by describing an improving picture of services within the Bradford district which was endorsed by a number of members quoting personal experience although there was some scepticism within our ranks. This was fuelled by talk of yet another reorganisation.

He gave credit to Labour's ten year plan created in 1997 but wondered what will follow as the level of  funding we have grown accustomed to will of course be cut at the end of this year. He was enthusiastic about the improvements in Patient/Doctor relationships but wondered whether the improvements in Doctor's remuneration had been overdone at the expense of others and whether some incentive had been lost as a result of handing over too much for too little in return.
