Help to Provide Trees for Stonehouse High Street.

Dedication Ceremony.  Monday, December 10th, 10.00am.

Under a bright blue sky with the sun shining down on over 60 sponsors who gathered outside the Old Police Station for the dedication ceremony of the 10 semi mature trees planted in Stonehouse High Street. The assembled people consisted of members of, the High Street Working Group who had worked over 6 years on the project, local town councillors, local town business sponsors school children from all our local schools and members of Stonehouse Rotary. 

Everyone was warmly welcomed and thanked for their attendance, sponsorship and support of the scheme by the Town Mayor, Chris Brine.  

Minister John Thompson from the Stonehouse Fraternity of Churches conducted the dedication ceremony and blessing of the trees reminding everyone that the original picture of the entrance to heaven was a town centre lined with trees as a sign of life and future hope. 

Stonehouse is clearly looking to the future and in respect of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee year with a million trees to be planted across the country is doing our bit for Queen and Country. 

Sponsors then had the opportunity to be photographed with the tree they had sponsored before retiring to the Town Hall where Chris Brine the Town Mayor hosted a light civic reception for the sponsors and supporters of the scheme.

Sponsors include all the local schools, The Shrubberies, Park Infants & Family Centre, Park Junior, Wycliffe and Maidenhill. Other sponsors are Delta Nine IT, Sarah Jane Kitchens, Location Estate Agents, Ann & John Jeynes, Local businesses, councillors and High Street Working Group members. 

The planting and dedication of the ten trees, five each of Hornbeam and American Ash is a once in a lifetime opportunity as the life expectancy of the trees is between 50 and 100 years. 

The picture here shows Rotarians John Morris and John Jeynes - who headed up the Rotary project to identify the sponsors - alongside one of the trees.

Update 2nd November 2011 - Almost there!

The trees have now been ordered, and planting is scheduled for November 16th to 18th timeframe.

10 semi-mature trees are to be planted in the High Street in November. There are 5 each of Hornbeam and American Ash. The trees will have a girth of 20-25cms and be 5 to 6 metres in height. The trees are ball grown trees and will be root anchored.

The trees are insured against disease. Watering and on going tree surgery has been arranged. The trees are expected to remain in place for at least 50 years.

Each tree will have plaque acknowledging how it was sponsored, for example by public subscription, a school, business etc.
