Wed Oct 12th 2011

Roger Johnson is a member of The Sherlock Holmes Society of London, and editor of the society’s newsletter and journal.

He gave a most interesting talk on Sir Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle, the Scottish physician and writer who is most noted for his stories about the detective Sherlock Holmes. These stories are generally considered a milestone in the field of crime fiction.

Arthur Conan Doyle was born the third of ten siblings on 22 May 1859 in Edinburgh.

In 1882 he had a medical practice in Southsea. Whilst waiting for patients he began writing stories, and composed his first novel, The Narrative of John Smith. This would go unpublished until 2011.

While living in Southsea, Conan Doyle played amateur football as a goalkeeper for Portsmouth AFC. He was also a keen cricketer.

His many stories followed, well known to us all, such as Sherlock Holmes in A Study in Scarlet and The Hound of the Baskervilles

Arther Conan Doyle passed away in July 1930 aged 71 in Crowborough Sussex.

A throughly interesting talk from Roger Johnson.
