My Job Talk by Joan

Joan gave us a most entertaining and informative insight into her background and her job.

Joan was born on Belfast and describes herself as Irish. She invited us to identify lots of well known people who also came from North Belfast, for example Mary MacAleese, James Galway, Gerry Fitt, Kenneth Branagh, Frank Carson, Mary Peters, John Cole.

Having left school as soon as she could, Joan started working life as a dental nurse, but searching the floor for teeth in a rubber apron didn't suit her at all, so she became a telephone operator, taking responsibility for 999 calls as well as " Dish of the Day" and the weather forecast. She confessed that her attendance record was not the best it could be
