Home | Fellowship | Blaize Trailers Walk 21 August 2012

Tue Aug 21st 2012
Tim Ratcliffe was walk leader on a 7 mile walk in Nidderdale centred on Birstwith.
This walk, led by Tim Ratcliffe in largely dry and warm weather, was in lower Nidderdale and started at Hampsthwaite and circled via the Ripley Estate, Burnt Yates, Birstwith (for an excellent if leisurely lunch at the newly-modernised Old Station) and back down the Nidderdale Way to Hampsthwaite. We met for coffee and millionaire's shortbread at 10am outside St Thomas a Beckett church at Hampsthwaite. Once Mr Waterhouse arrived 20 minutes later we were able to depart. The walkers were Messrs Arthur, Morrell, Ratcliffe, Smiths Paul and Julian, Allan, Watson, Meredith, Waterhouse, Tate and Holdsworth, with a special guest appearance from Mr Richterich as a diner and walker on the post-lunch stretch. The distance was 7 miles of which 5.5 were before lunch. The route was part quiet road, part fields, but in parts muddy, thanks to this week's continuing showers, particularly along the ancient trackway downhill to the packhorse bridge on the Nidd above Birstwith. The fellowship was excellent and the terrain easy, the views extensive but hazy, the nettles still stinging. A downpour only 5 minutes from the end forced us to shelter under the yews in Hampsthwaite's lovely churchyard, or risk a soaking. A good day out
