Wed Dec 7th 2011

On 7th December, Rotarian Robert Newell recounted the story “Saving Ian Paisley”

Robert is currently President of Hitchin Tilehouse Rotary Club.

Born in Quetta in 1936, he joined the Army in 1958 and during a 24 year  career did 2 tours of duty in Northern Ireland with the Gloucestershire Regiment.

He described the relationship between the Army and the local population  at  the time, and how they had three main methods of crowd control: baton rounds, plastic rounds and the more effective CS Gas rounds.

Robert finished his talk by recounting the time when, as Major commanding the garrison based behind the Royal Victoria Hospital, he received a visit by the Reverend Ian Paisley, seeking sanctuary.

The garrison was able to conceal him before a hostile crowd assembled and convince them that he was not in the compound. Having persuaded the crowd to disperse the Reverend gentleman was able to leave unharmed.
