Rotary Club of Penrith Youth competitions

Rotary offer young people a platform for talents to blossom, shine and be celebrated.

A programme of local, regional heats leading to National finals are arranged. These
contests are a great way for young people to be challenged in a fun and safe
environment.

Young Chef
This competition challenges the participants to prepare and present a meal,
within a set budget and timescale.
Both QEGS and UCC are competing this year
The Club Competition takes place on Thursday 26 January 2023, 4-00pm at QEGS.
Pat Russell of the Lakeland School of Cookery has agreed to be a judge.
District Final is on 9 February 2023.
Both departments have new staff this year and Alex is building a relationship with them.
This augurs well for the future.
Budget £250

Young Writer
We do our own version of this.
The competition allows entrants to let their imagination run wild to express
themselves and get creative with the written word. We target Junior Schools.
The competition will begin either later this term or early next term. Nick has suggested
that the competition be a post SATS activity.
He will liaise with the Herald newspaper.
Young Photographer. Lead Syd Monk
This competition allows participants the chance to express themselves through
photography, to interpret the competition brief,(The Beauty of Architecture) and
experiment with digital and traditional methods.
UCC have agreed to take part. They have a new GCSE course this year and this will fit in
nicely with the curriculum.
Key dates
13 February 2023 Closing Date
17 February 2023 Photographs submitted for Judging
1 March 2023 - Judging (to be arranged.)
14 March 2023 – Entries to District.

RYLA
This is in effect an outward bound course. Typical activities include conservation
exercises, hiking, canoeing, climbing, ghyll scrambling, a two day self supporting
expedition.
The week culminates with a sponsored car wash for charity and a final dinner
when participants present a power point presentation depicting their
experiences.
UCC are keen to participate. The details for 2023 week have not been published.
Budget £570 approx.

Young Musician
Music is an international language and we have a wealth of talented young
musicians and instrumentalists in the area.
Participants are given the opportunity to share their gifts and talents by
performing on the public stage and receive feedback from experienced judges.
This year Dawn is the lead for the district competition and we will support her in her
arrangements for the District Competition.

Life Education Centres (LEC)
This adventure began in 1997 following an idea brought back from Australia by
the then Prince Charles.. The programme, is delivered by experienced and trained
Educators, supports junior schools to deliver their PHSE curriculum.
Programmes are created and validated by our parent Charity Coram and have
evolved over the years and we now deliver a nationally acclaimed SCARF
programme.
SCARF : Safety, Caring, Achievement, Resilience Friendship.
Prior to COVID the programme was delivered in a purpose built and equipped mobile
classrooms.
During Covid greater use was made of Zoom. Post Covid, at the request of schools, the
programmes are delivered either in school or by Zoom.
Consequently a decision was made to sell the mobile classrooms. One has been
purchased by the local 4 Mind and will be used as a sensory space.
