Youth Opportunities

We are delighted that our competitions for local young musicians, chefs, photographers, writers and speakers prove so popular, as it gives us the inspiration to continue our work every year.

Every year our Youth Opportunities committee works hard to organise and develop competitions for local children.

Our most successful competitions include the Young Chef competition, in which pupils from Our Lady & St. Patrick's High Scool and the Vale of Leven Academy compete for a place in the District 1230 Final at South Lanarkshire College, East Kilbride. The competition is judged by three local chefs and every year produces dishes of excellent quality. Every entrant receives a certificate for taking part, and the winner has the opportunity to spend time in the kitchen of a local restaurant prior to taking part in the District Final where he or she will sport personalised chef's whites.  The first three winners of the club competition receive shields and the school of the winning entrant gets to retain a silver plate for the year. We thank the schools every year for putting in the effort with the entrants, and also the local press for generating some excitement about the event.

The Young Musician competition we have held for many years has expanded recently to include both secondary school entrants as well as those from primary school. It has split now into two events for each age group, each held at the wonderful Riverside Parish Church on Dumbarton High Street, and we are extremely thankful to the church for opening its doors to us every year for the events. We are delighted each year with the standard of the entrants, testament no doubt again to the effort from their respective schools and parental influence. This event goes from strength to strength every year thanks to this committee, and we hope to see you at the church for our next competition.

The Committee has also organised competitions for Young Writer, Youth Speaks and Young Photographer, and arranges for a schools visit each year for pupils.
