MOUNT'S BAY ROTARY

In the 1980's it was recognised that lunchtime Rotary meetings deterred many potential Rotarians from joining, owing to business commitments. A drive to create new evening clubs therefore came into action.

In Cornwall, new clubs were formed in Helston (Helston Lizard Club), Truro (Boscawen) and even an early morning club in Plymouth (Mayflower). Along with these the Rotary Club of Mount's Bay started its gestation period as an offspring of Penzance lunchtime club.

Russell Whitlock was the first member and very soon he was joined by Rod Varlow, Roy McDiarmid and Hudson Smith. The club could not be chartered until 25 members were enlisted. This took some 4 months, however, the Charter was achieved on 24th April 1989.

The club follows the format of all Rotary clubs and forms its members into groups which would address different areas of service - from addressing local needs and problems, to helping the disadvantaged across the globe as part of Rotary International.

The activities of Mount's Bay Rotary have ranged from supplying funds and support to; Rotary's Jaipur Limb Project, Ecuador Water Project and Shoebox Scheme to name but a few. The club has also purchased many Shelter Boxes since they were introduced.

On a more local basis, our achievements include staging the club's Annual Old Folks Christmas Party, the annual St Michael's Way Walk and the revival of the Penwith Peninsular Cycle charity ride. The club also sponsors talented young people in the community.

Any Mount's Bay Rotary member will testify to the satisfaction they have derived from these, and many more projects, as well as the friendships made along the way. As one member put it: "Rotary is challenging, rewarding and fun".

Mount's Bay Rotary is also honoured with several members and individuals holding the Paul Harris Fellowship award, presented for outstanding service to Rotary and the local community.

If you feel you are the sort of person who could take up the challenge of Rotary membership, why not come along to one of the club's meetings and talk to a Rotarian, you will be most welcome.
