Information and updates from our Sports Committee
The Sports Committee arranges sporting events and visits for Club members as well as organising local input to Rotary sporting events such as the District Young Golfer Tournament. This year there will again be entries in the District and British golf tournaments as well as indoor bowling and a visit to an ice hockey match

[a] John reported that six members and friends had attended the night at the new Virtual Golf Shop on Channel Street, Galalshiels and had an excellent time. Bill was the only injury with blisters on his hands despite being told to grip the club lightly !!!. John felt it was well worth another night in the future.
[b] Rae reported that on Monday [yesterday] he and Alastair had gone to Haddington in the RIBI pairs golf competition and managed to defeat a strong Haddington pair. They next play Langholm in the District semi-final.
Notification has just been received that the District Junior Golf
Competition will take place on 6th August, 2015, again at
Lockerbie. Torwoodlee are holding a
Junior Open on Sunday, 7th June, 2015 and it is hoped that this will
help with our selection process, should the Club to send two young golfers to
the District event again.

[a] John Gray reported that Alastair and Rae had taken part the Rotary Club of Annan’s Charity Golf event at Powfoot on Sunday, 5th April, 2015. They had both played and scored well and just missed out on the Rotary Trophy. The weather was better this year, but due to the mist, Alastair has still to see the Solway Firth.!!!
[b] John has been unable to arrange the usual bowling match with Abbotsford Bowling Club as the outdoor season has now started.
[c] John intimated that eight members had put their names down to have a night at the new Virtual Golf Shop on Channel Street, Galalshiels. The Club felt that a Wednesday night would be the most convenient and he would go ahead with arrangements.

[a] John Gray metioned that Alastair Christie and Rae Hastings are hoping to arrange the usual bowling match with Abbotsford Bowling Club. More details to follow
(b) John Gray told us of the new Virtual Golf Shop that had opened up on Channel Street in Galashiels which is great news for the Town. He said it was £24/per hour and we should support the new business by visiting it (golfers and non-golfers) No arrangements at this point have been made to go.

[a] John Gray reports that Alastair and Rae were entered the Rotary Club of Annan’s Charity Golf event at Powfoot on Sunday, 5th April, 2015. They are hoping the weather is better this year.
[b] John is hoping to arrange the usual bowling match with Abbotsford Bowling Club.

[a] John reported that he had been in contact with Torwoodlee Golf Club asking for two young players to represent the Club at the District Junior Golf Competition at Lockerbie at the end of July. The 40.00 for entry fees has been sent away.
[b] Alastair and Rae have reached the semi-finals of the District part of the RIBI Golf Competition and play Duns next week.

John intimated that the Club hoped again to enter two young persons in the Rotary District Junior Golf Competition at Lockerbie and said that he was looking for 40.00 to cover entry fees. Council agreed to allocating this sum. John was also contacting Torwoodlee, who now had a very active junior coaching scheme to help select two suitable participants for the Rotary event.

John reported that 22 Rotary Members and friends from the Galashiels and Melrose Clubs are attending the hospitality lunch at Netherdale on Saturday, 25th January, 2014 for the Galashiels/Melrose rugby match.

John reported that he was looking for a date of a suitable British Cup rugby match, to arrange hospitality for Club Members, along the same lines as last year, which was a great success enjoyed by all.

John reported that he was progressing the District Junior Golf Competition at Duddingston Golf Club in Edinburgh. And that the Club had agreed to pay the entry fees of 30.00 to enter two young golfers for this event.

John reported that the only sporting event on the horizon was the District Junior Golf Competition at Duddingston Golf Club in Edinburgh. John asked if the Club could again enter two young golfers for this event at the cost of about 30.00 to the Club. Council agreed to this request.

John had sent Rae a report [all the way from Norfolk] regarding the annual fixture with Abbotsford Bowling Club on Friday, 29th March, 2013. John, Alastair, Drew, Evan and Norman had attended, along with guests, Sandy Black and Ron Murray. For the first time ever, one of our rinks comprising of Alastair, Drew and Sandy Black won their match 12-5. The pairs competition was won by Sandy Black and John Hunter.

[a] John reported that the corporate hospitality day at Nethdale in conjunction with a British/Irish Cup game had been a great success and enjoyed by all who had attended.

a] John reported that our team of Rae, Alastair and Duncan were attending District Competition at the Dumfries and County Club tomorrow, 12th September, 2012. [The team took part, but thankfully did not win. Dumfries won the trophy and will run the event next year. It was very disappointing that only thirteen teams took part, with only three teams, Portobello, Lanark and Galashiels, from outwith the south west area. They were all thanked for supporting the event. Neither the District Governor nor the District Sports Officer attended. This lack of enthusiasm and support will have to looked into]
[b] John is looking at the possibility of a date for Club members to attend Kelso Races. He would look at the costs of packages then see what interest there is from the Club.
[c] He is also looking at a corporate outing to one of the bigger rugby matches at Netherdale.

[a] John reported that the main sporting activities in the Club is Golf . The Club did not have a team for the Charity
Golf at Duns on the 9th August and Rae has e-mailed an apology to them. However, we have team for the District Competition at the Dumfries and County Club on the 12th September.
[b] Two boys, Richard Rutherford and Craig Forsyth are representing the Club by taking part in the District Youth Golf Competition at Whitekirk.. [They were taken down by Rae and had a very enjoyable day. They came in 3rd in the Team Handicap and were delighted to receive an inscribed plaque each

[a] John reported that the main sporting activities in the Club is Golf with competitions coming up at Duns on the 9th August, Dalkeith on 18th September and the District Competition at the Dumfries and County Club on the 12th September.
[b] There appears to be some difficulty in raising two boys to take part in the District Youth Golf Competition at Whitekirk.. As a result, John still has the 40.00 cheque.

[a] John reported that the Golf team who took part in the Haddington Rotary Golf Day had had a good day but were unsuccessful, except for a ‘nearest the hole’ prize by Rae.
[b] John Gray requested a cheque for 40.00 to pay for the Youth RIBI Scottish Boys Championship entry.
[c] Mr Gray will confirm the arrangement for The Braw Lads Sports on 24th June 2012 especially access for the disabled.

John was an apology, but he had asked Rae to read out the recent letter he had received intimating the Scottish Rotary Curling Competition on Tuesday, 13th March, 2012 at . Rae had read the letter out, but there were no takers [or curlers] either !!!

[a] John reported that he was arranging the annual indoor bowling match with Abbotsford Bowling Club on Friday, 6th April, 2012 and a team of eight players would be required.
[b] He is also looking at a possible date for attending Murrayfield Ice Rink for an Ice Hockey match. This has been an enjoyable night over the past two years.
[c] John is also looking at the possibility of a Clay Pigeon Shoot at Braidwood Clays at Midlem

Some members had attended an ice hockey match at Murrayfield Ice Rink, followed by a meal at Quins on return to Galashiels. Thanks to John and Lynda for arranging an excellent evening.

[a] John said that he now had five names entered for the match with Abbotsford Bowling Club on Friday, 1st April, 2011. First rink play at 7pm and the second at 8pm. The sheet is still on the board and eight players are required.
[b] Arrangements are being made for a visit to Murrayfield Ice Rink on Saturday, 26th February, 2011 at 6pm, for the game between Edinburgh Capitals and Belfast. It is hoped to have the same arrangements as last year, when members came back to an excellent meal at Quins.
