ROTARY FOUNDATION is the charitable arm of Rotary. It was established in 1917 as an endowment by the then outgoing President Arch Klumph for the purpose of doing good in the world. That one idea and an initial contribution of $26.50 set in motion a Foundation that has transformed millions of lives around the globe since its inception. During the course of the last hundred years and more, $3 billion has been spent on life-changing sustainable projects.
Rotary is dedicated to six areas of focus to build international relationships, improve lives, create a better world, to support peace efforts and end polio forever. The Foundation’s causes therefore are: Promoting Peace, Providing Clean Water, Saving Mothers and Children, Supporting Education, Growing Local Economies and Fighting Disease.
Funds raised locally for Foundation projects can, when supported by RIBI and Global Grants from Rotary International, be increased fourfold. In 2010 the Rotary clubs of Southwest Scotland, led by our Dumfries Club, raised £11000 which became £44000 and allowed us to purchase two fully equipped new ambulances for North East Bosnia.
Clubs continue to support End Polio Now. To support this international project our club has purchased and planted, with the help of our Rotakids, over 25000 crocus corms in recent years. Only two countries, Afghanistan and Pakistan, still have endemic polio so with a final push, the dream of a world free of this horrific disease is realistically possible.
The prospect of a Maggie’s Centre being created in Dumfries has captured the imagination of all the local Rotary clubs. The concept of a Rotary branded facility within the new centre, costing around £250000, to be raised over two or three years, has captured the imagination. The development is awaiting a positive decision from the local Health Board.
All clubs are encouraged to support Foundation financially. $100 (£80 approx) per member per annum is the recommended amount. Standing Order forms are available from the Secretary, or cheques can be made payable to Rotary Foundation.
