Membership of the Rotary Club

Rotary is an international membership organisation made up of people who share a passion for and commitment to enhancing and improving lives across the globe.

Some Facts

Rotary was founded by Paul Harris in 1905 in Chicago USA

There are 1.2 million Rotarians world-wide in 34,000 clubs in over 200 countries.

In Great Britain and Ireland there are more than 51,000 Rotarians in 8,100 clubs.

What does membership of Rotary Mean?

Rotary's main objective is Service - in the community, in the workplace, and throughout the world. Membership of Rotary provides individuals with the means to help those in need.

Rotarians are people like YOU

They are active, enthusiastic and fun-loving men and women of all ages, business people, professionals or community leaders who all share a common interest in friendship and helping others.

What do Rotarians get out of it?

Ask Rotarians what they get out of Rotary, and each will give a different answer. Some enjoy the social aspect; others appreciate business networking opportunities, enriching professional and personal knowledge and volunteering time and talents. However, all love the chance to give something back to the community.

The Object of Rotary

The object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster the development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service.

What does a Rotarian do?

Each member contributes time and skills to work on projects as part of a team. Your skills may include leadership, project management, organisation and people management, creativity and innovation, communication, technological skills – your desire to lend a hand is the most useful thing you have to offer.

How Much Time is Required?

Members contribute to Rotary according to changing demands of family and work commitments. Rotary as an organisation recognises the need for members to place family and employment ahead of volunteer activities.

Clubs meet weekly throughout the year, often over a meal, to hear guest speakers address varied and relevant topics.

What does the Rotary Club of Dumfries do?

The Rotary Club of Dumfries is committed to improving community life in Dumfries and is active in many worthwhile activities. In addition, Club members and their spouses, friends and supporters have always been active fund raisers and during the last few years have supported the following charities, organisations and initiatives:

A key part of what we do is running and supporting activities and events for young people including:

Primary School Quiz, Young Musician Competition, Summer and Winter “Kids Out” Events and Primary School Speechmaking Competition.  We also support young sports people and entertainers through various schemes.

There are three types of membership available:

Full Membership: Full membership of the club.

Corporate Membership: Perfect for business! If your organisation wants to work closely with your local Rotary club to get involved in the community, you can. Rotary is a great way to put your organisation’s Corporate Social Responsibility ideas into action,
