Now an independent charity in its own right, The Southend TN provides a free, weekly, recording of local news to blind and partially sighted people.
The Southend Talking Newspaper was formed by the combined efforts of the Southend Rotary and Inner Wheel Clubs and was launched in 1978. In 1980 an independent Charity was formed and it has been a 'stand alone' organisation since that time (Registered Charity number 280590).
There is still a strong active presence of Rotary and Inner Wheel members amongst the seven teams of volunteers who, each week, record on CD an hour of local Southend news read from the Echo and other local newspapers.
The discs are posted out to our listeners on Friday each week and there are no charges for the service or for postage.
If anyone that you know is no longer able to read a newspaper and would like to take the Talking Newspaper service, please contact the TN using the 'contact' facility on this website, or by telephoning 01702 554536 or 01702 585788
