Contestants were invited to choose a one of the following, on which to base their essay.

 1.       "A Day In The Life of .......?" - choose a celebrity/historical figure/sportsperson to write an imaginary recount about a typical day in their life. You can choose to write in the first or third-person.

 2.     "The Olympics and Me" - what do the London Olympics in 2012 mean to you? Are you looking forward to it? What will the legacy be? Is it worth the expense? Write about your viewpoint using any relevant research to support your opinion.

 3.     "The Secret History of........?" - a narrative based on an object. Tell a story that has been stimulated by a particular prop or object, e.g. historical artefact, an item of clothing, a musical instrument etc.
