Community Service

Community Service covers the projects and activities the club undertakes to improve life in its community.

Vocational Service encourages Rotarians to serve others through their vocations and to practice high ethical standards.

Community Service

One of the principal aims of the Club is to identify ways in which it can support the local Community.

This may be a specific Rotary initiative, or may be linked to supporting other organisations to help deliver worthwhile projects in the Community.

Each year the Club undertakes a range of activities.  Some have been running for a number of years.  Others are new ideas.

Many of these activities are coordinated by our Community and Vocational Group, with other initiatives being organised on a "whole club" basis, or linked to particular fundraising social events.

Recent events that have taken place include:

  • Funded mainly from the proceeds of our Bedale Book and Postcard Fairs, in July 2023 we were able to make a number of donations to good causes.  These included a further £1000 for the Herriot Hospice@The Lambert Appeal during their "Make It Happen" Campaign - which allowed this money to be doubled for the benefit of the appeal. We also agreed a further £1000 to be spent as and when Hambleton Foodshare require urgent shopping to meet shortages of supplies for distribution, £500 for MyMitoMission, a charity dealing with Mitocondrial disease, and £500 to Brain Tumour Research.
  • On Shrove Tuesday 2023 a team from the Club took part in the Pancake Races - raising money for Hambleton Foodshare.
  • We supported the Bedale Breakfast Club initiative with a donation of £100.
  • We supported Bloodrun North, a charity transferring emergency blood supplies to hospitals, with a donation of £500.
  • We provided support to Ukranian families in the Bedale area who have come to live here under the Homes for Ukraine Scheme. Using monies provided through District Support funds we were able to purchase iPads for 3 families to assist with children's schoolwork and family language learning, and using our own funds we also bought some fotball equipment to allow one of the boys to join the local football club
  • In November 2022 we repeated our succesful Quiz Night with Pie and Pea Supper, raising £600 for the Herriot Hospice@The Lambert Appeal.
  • Also in November we supported the Town Council with the Bucket Collection at the Northallerton Town Firework display. Money collected in the buckets goes towards the cost of the fireworks for the next years event.
  • In September 2022 we helped raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Relief at their Coffee Morning at the Town Hall.
  • We gave a grant of £200 to Northallerton Samaritans to assist with urgent building repairs at their premises.

Vocational

Through vocational service, Rotarians are expected to adhere to, and promote high ethical standards in all their business and professional lives, recognise the worthiness of all useful occupations, and contribute their professional expertise and skills to addressing the problems and needs of society. This is a cornerstone of the Rotary movement.

These skills are available to the Club when it develops a range of projects to help the Community.
