The first round of the District 1010 Primary School Quiz was held at on Friday 27 January 2012.

Rotarian Colin Peebles from Carse of Stirling Rotary Club had kindly agreed that we could enter 2 teams as our efforts to attract support from local schools had not produced enough interest. Teams from and Newton Primary, accompanied by family, teachers and supporters were up against teams from Allan's, , Braehead, Cambusbarron, Cowie, Gargunnock, and St. Ninians.

There were 10 rounds with 6 questions in each round on Geography, Music and Art, General Science, Literature, Famous People, The Environment and Natural World, Sport, Maths, History and Spelling and Grammer. Quiz Master was none other than Neil Oliver, well known Scottish broadcaster, historian and author. He did a great job, putting the kids at ease and interspersing the questions with anecdotes and comments to make the whole event great fun. He also had posed with each team for a photograph which he signed and presented to all participants along with a signed Certificate.

After a break for tea and biscuits, the quiz entered the final session with only 6 points separating the highest and lowest scores. The teams from and Bridge of Allan Primary Schools finished on 47 points each (78%) and played a tie break round. This did not resolve the outcome so it went to 'Sudden Death' with a topical question on how old Robert Burns would have been had he been alive today. After a bit of head scratching, the team were first to shout out the correct answer and were declared winners. They will now go on to the Area Final in in April and hopefully progress to the District Final on 9 June in Old Meldrum. Deputy Head Julie Russell collected a cheque for £200 towards school funds with the runners up getting £100.

The audience had also been invited to participate in the quiz and our 'Team' of John Kilby, Peter Farr and Graham Russell amassed a total of 56 correct answers! Unfortunately, our bid for the winning audience prize was disallowed by Colin Peebles as we were Rotarians from another Club!!

President Eddie Cramb from Carse of Stirling Rotary closed the evening by thanking all the competitors, staff and parents for their enthusiastic support, his club members, particularly Colin Peebles for all their hard work in organising the event and to Neil Oliver who had done a wonderful job as Quiz Master and who stayed on afterwards to sign autographs and pose for photos.
