.

Sandra Dibling is Fundraising Manager of Buckinghamshire Macmillan Cancer Support, and she explained that her role encompassed both fundraising and raising awareness of the charity's work.

Macmillan’s aim is to ‘reach and improve the lives of everyone living with cancer’. It does this by employing healthcare professionals and by providing a range of support services including counselling and advice. Their services are available from diagnosis until the time when they are no longer needed.

Some of the cancer statistics are quite alarming. In 2011, over 300,000 people were diagnosed with cancer and it is estimated that 1 in 3 people will suffer from some form of cancer during their lifetime. By 2030, it is estimated that 4 million people will be living with cancer.

Macmillan employs 46 healthcare professionals within Buckinghamshire and almost 5,400 nationwide. Funds raised within Bucks form part of Macmillan’s general fundraising with the services within the county being funded from central funds.

Sandra gave us an interesting and informative talk which helped to dispel the perception that Macmillan’s activities were centred around ‘end of life’ care.
