A talk by Mr Dave Adams on the Fire Brigade Museum.

This evening, members received a fascinating talk and slideshow from Mr David Adam about the new Fire Brigade Museum in Greenock.  His talk began with a comprehensive history of the Fire Service, beginning in ancient Rome with the Vigils, a group of men tasked with putting out fires and rudimentary police duties, which gave rise to the term vigilante.  He then described how the modern Fire and Rescue Service grew in the UK, especially during the Second World War when it was put to the ultimate test.  A former Fireman himself, David then moved on to the main part of his talk, describing the work of the Preservation Group, a team of 60 to 70 volunteers, who have done wonders to restore not only a wide range of old Fire Appliances but also the old Fire Station in Greenock which will open soon as the Fire Brigade Museum.  This is an extremely worthwhile local venture which deserves the support of all in the local area.  We thank David for taking the time to acquaint us with his work and wish the Museum every success for the future.
