President Steve welcomed club members Rtn Stephen Lay (Camborne) Rotarians from Truro Boscawen who are with us for their scatter week – Steve Todd (President), Ed Hallett, Julian Herbert (President Elect) , Frank Perry (Treasurer), David Rider (Secretary) , David Roberts, Brian Salmon, David Hughes and our speaker Rtn John James (Mounts Bay – DGE)
Thought for the day – George Curnow – George took us all on a trip beginning with Ash Wednesday and ending with Crash Wednesday on his lead up to his thought for the day. Having searched Google for a quote relating to Ash Wednesday he had found a little story about a boy who stuck an Ash Twig in his sock to prevent schoolmates from stamping on his foot – a sort of good luck charm. Further research revealed that Wednesday was the day of the week when most road accidents occurred.
Would carrying an ash twig in your car prevent other motorists from ‘stamping on your foot’
Speaker
District Governor Elect, John James gave us an interesting insight in to the way Rotary Foundation will be changing to Future Vision in 2013 – 14. He explained some of the acronyms used and how Foundation is Rotary’s own charity. Every Rotarian is asked to contribute to it financially every year, either by funds sent in from the club or by personal contribution through the year. Future Vision will see the grants issued at District level. Funds raised in one year are held for 3 years and then 50% comes back to the District for clubs to apply for and then look for matched funding to help with larger projects. Clubs need to be looking forward now to what projects they may wish to be involved in for 2013 -14. Grants are not restricted to overseas projects but can be used here in the District if a project is identified.
