Clubs tidy up litter around school.

On Saturday 31st March, the Rotary Club of Llantwit Major joined forces with the town's Interact Club based at the Comprehensive School to clear litter from rural paths around the school.  Rotary President, Neville Farthing, suggested to the Interact Club that the problem of litter had become so serious that perhaps we could tackle it with a combined operation on Saturday morning.  The Vale of Glamorgan Council was contacted who agreed to help by cutting brambles and providing gloves, litter grabs and refuse sacks. In addition the Director of Keep Wales Tidy, Ian Harvey, lent his support by turning up personally to do his part.

Over the course of the morning the litter pickers, working in small groups at various points on paths around the school collected over twenty-five sacks full of rubbish which the Vale helpfully removed for them.  One of the problems the teams faced was impacted rubbish on top of more rubbish.  The sell-by-date on some of the discarded crisp packs in some cases was for more than six years ago indicating they had lain there for a considerable time.  The hard-working teams armed with rakes, grabbers and sacks made a huge dent in the problem and managed to restore many parts of the walks to their natural beauty.  Neville Farthing said, "We all look at the litter problem and grumble but, of course, that doesn't make it go away.  As a Rotary Club we decided it was time to do something about it and to enlist our school Interact Club to help.  I am grateful to the Rotarians and particularly the young Interact members all of whom were from Year 12 of Llantwit Major Comprehensive School including: Jordan Boswell, Sian Jones, Daniel Lewis, Daniel Owen, Lauren Mortimer, Hannah Thomas and Laura Smith.  Together we have made a difference" he said.
