Aug 2012 Speaker Rtn Ron Febrey - Progress with the Naalarami School project

Mon, Aug 20th 2012 at 12:00 am - 2:00 am

Rotarian Ron Febrey - Rotary Club of Arusha Golden Sunrise, Tanzania - the delights and problems of supporting the school building project. Speaker host S Franklin

The Arusha Rotary Club recognised the great need that existed in the Naalrami village area. There were very limited learning facilities but around 350 Masai children, within a 10km area, who were keen to learn to read, write, count and find out about the wider world. The built up roads out of Arusha run out quite soon and access to the village is across miles of dusty ground or sticky mud, depending on the recent weather. Materials and skilled workers are in short supply and funding is desperately needed. So building classrooms, a teachers house, a kitchen and play facilities is a far from easy process.

The area has had two years of drought and a solution has to found before time and energy are spare for learning. The problem has been made worse by a recent flash flood that destroyed the local dam and released their store of fresh water. Two local businessmen from Cottenham have established The Water Project with the aim of providing several large, durable water tanks that will be fed from the new roofs of the school buildings. The Club has been very impressed with their enthusiasm and their on the ground contacts with Ron and the Arusha Rotary Club he represents.
