Malcolm has been a player of wheelchair basketball for over 30 years and has more than 200 caps for Great Britain, with his honours including a Paralympic Silver in Atlanta 1996, World Silver in 1994 and European Gold in 1995.
Today we enjoyed a visit from members of the Rotary Club of Mold on their Scatter Week. We hope they enjoyed good fellowship with us.
Our guest speaker today was Malcolm Tarkenter, Chairman of the British Wheelchair Basketball Asociation who lives in Oswestry.
Malcolm spoke about how wheelchair basketball had been his passion since a freak accident at the age of 17 appeared to bring to an end the previously normal and sporting life of an apprentice plumber.
His progress and development within the sport and his subsequent development of the sport was moving and inspiring to hear and gave our members much to think about.
It was easy to listen to Malcolm's modest and unassuming talk without fully recognising his importance to the sport of Wheelchair Basketball. However, the British Paralympic Association marked that this summer when he was one of 20 athletes nominated by the BPA (one representing each of the summer Paralympic sports) to carry the Paralympic torch on its overnight journey from Stoke Mandeville to London this August!
