Our speaker on July 31st was Mair Jones who gave us a different perspective on the notion of a talk. After the meal she disappeared for a while to return as Mrs. Alethia Eliza Pierce, wife of the famous Denbigh doctor, Dr. Evan Piece.
Alethia Eliza Pierce was a wealthy woman who met Dr. Pierce when she was his patient and married him even though she was only half his age. Mrs Pierce had only good things to say about her husband unlike many influential people in the town.
Dr. Pierce was born in 1808 in Llanrhaeadr and achieved fame when he fought cholera in Denbigh in the 1830's. He was also a Coroner, Alderman, JP and Mayor of Denbigh on five occasions. He started the local fire brigade and was responsible for the public clock on the County Hall and for building the Memorial Hall, now Theatr Twm o'r Nant. Perhaps most towns people know him today from the large statue of him erected during his life time in gardens opposite his home, Salisbury Place, on Vale Street and now Lidi's Store.
Th purpose of this presentation was to introduce us to a vintage clothes shop that Mair and her sister Nerys Ann Roberts have opened, Vintage MaryDei, which aims to help carers in the Denbigh area. Mair and Nerys Ann looked after their parents David and Mary Jones for many years and they now hope to help those many people looking after family members with little or no support from anyone else.
