On August 7th our speaker was Richard Price whose talk was entitled "Living and Working in Antarctica. A British Perspective."
In the 1970's and 1980's he was a marine biologist with the British Antarctic Survey and was based in a research station on Sydney Island, one of the South Orkney Islands.
At that time this was full time base and had a summer population of thirty scientists reducing to twelve in winter. Summer lasted for four months and during the eight winter months temperature fell to 40 degrees Celsius. Communication and supplies was by ship in those days and this could only happen, of course, in the short summer season.
The scientists were engaged on a number of surveys and these included
Richard also spoke of the dangers in living in Antarctica mentioned frost nip. frost bite, storms, falling into crevasses and falling through pack ice into the sea.
It was not all work, however, and "holidays" were taken camping away from the base. An important time off for everyone was the mid winter party.
Richard returns to Antarctica, but now as a specialised guide on cruise ships.
