Fellowship Day Out; Visit To Elvington Airfield.

Rotarians travelled to the airfield at Elvington on Wednesday 6 June. This airfield, with the longest runway in the UK, was a base for Free French bomber squadrons in WW2. Guided by Rotarians John Whelan and Mike Williams who had careers in the R.A.F., we were fascinated to learn their personal accounts of several of the aircraft on display.

We visited a display building devoted to the Bomber squadrons and gained an insight into this brave group. A belated memorial to their heroism is shortly to be established. A Handley Page Halifax 1940
