Consultant clinical geneticist Dr. Emma McCann, gave us an insight into the mechanics of inheritance and how genetic variation relates to human health and diseases. We learnt about the history of the study of genetics from 1753, when the equal contribution of both sexes to inheritance was first proposed, to 1859 when Charles Darwin wrote about natural selection and to the twentieth century when, with the aid of technology, our knowledge of genetics expanded.
Emma then went on to talk about genes and the chromosomes that house and move genes about the body and also about how an imbalance of genes may cause problems.
Much of the work of geneticists is looking at the medical history of families in an attempt to calculate how much of a risk an individual has in inheriting a disease especially cancer.
