7:00pm Dinner - Anne Fawbert

Thu, Oct 18th 2012 at 12:00 am - 2:00 am

A talk entitled - "St Petersburg Forum".

This evening, prior to our speaker's talk, we were addressed by the Assistant District Governor, Jim Norton from the Hunterston Club.  His main thrust was to remind members that the primary aim of Rotary Internation is the world-wide elimination of Polio, an aim we wholeheartedly hope can be achieved sooner rather than later.  After Jim, we were given a slideshow presentation by Anne Fowbert entitled "My St Petersburg Experience".  Anne's link to this great city comes from her being invited to be a judge at their "Knowledge of Scotland" competition held in 2006 and the city's link with Scotland goes back to the Second World War when the women of Scotland tried to help the women of the city when it was besieged by the Nazis.  After the War, the links were further cemented through the McMillan Nursing charity with training for Russian nurses.  An affinity grew up and, even in schools, there is a thirst for knowledge of all things Scottish, hence the competition.  Anne's presentation was not only entertaining but also extremely informative and we are all grateful to her for coming along.
